Reading the Signs: A Conversation with Dr. Randi Shannon, N.D.

On ancient diagnostics, root-cause healing, and why the body was never really silent

Twenty-five years into a virtual naturopathic practice that has reached more than 10,000 people, Dr. Randi Shannon sat down to talk about the method at the heart of her work β€” and why she believes the body has been speaking all along.

Let’s start simple. How do you describe what you do?

I’m a naturopathic doctor, and I help people understand what their body is trying to tell them. My whole practice, The Body CAN, is built on a very old idea β€” that the body shows the signs of imbalance on the surface long before anything shows up in a blood test. My job is to read those signs and help people get to the root of what’s actually going on.

Your signature method is face, tongue, and nail analysis. For someone who’s never heard of it, what is that?

It’s a diagnostic tradition that goes back roughly 5,000 years. The idea is that the face, the tongue, and the fingernails act like a map. The color of the tongue, the ridges or spots on a nail, certain markers on the face β€” to a trained eye, those can point to organ stress, nutrient deficiencies, and toxin buildup. These are things that standard bloodwork often misses entirely, because it’s not looking for them. I’ve spent 25 years learning to read that map.

How is that different from how most people experience the healthcare system?

Most care starts with a symptom and a test, and then treats the number. If your thyroid marker is off, you get a medication for the thyroid marker. That can be necessary, and I always want to be clear I’m not against medicine. But it often stops at the symptom. I start by asking why β€” why did this body fall out of balance in the first place? Once you understand the root cause, you can build a plan that actually supports healing rather than just quieting the signal.

You describe a three-step process. What is it?

Analyze, personalize, heal. First I analyze β€” I look at the signs and listen to the person’s full story. Then I personalize, because no two people are the same, so no two plans should be either. And then we work through the healing plan together, whether that’s a single strategy consultation or a six-month program for something more complex.

You’ve worked with more than 10,000 people. Are there conditions you see most often?

I’ve studied over a thousand chronic conditions over the years, but I’m drawn especially to the hard ones β€” autoimmune disease, thyroid problems, Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, hormone imbalance, chronic fatigue, and the anxiety and depression that so often come with being chronically unwell. These are the people who’ve often been everywhere else first and still don’t have answers. That’s usually when they find me.

Your practice is entirely virtual. Was that always the plan?

It became the plan once I saw what it made possible. When you work online, geography stops mattering. Someone in a small town with no naturopath within a hundred miles has the exact same access as someone in a big city. I have clients all over the world now, and I couldn’t serve them any other way.

You’re very open about the limits of your work. Why is that important to you?

Because integrity matters, especially in natural health. My services are complementary and educational β€” I’m not a licensed physician, and I never pretend to be. If I see something concerning, the first thing I do is refer that person to their doctor. Being clear about that isn’t a weakness in the work. It’s what makes it trustworthy.

Faith comes up when you talk about your practice. What role does it play?

It’s the center of everything. My mission is to reflect the healing presence of God by improving the health of the people I serve. I see the people who come to me as exactly that β€” people to serve, not cases to process. That changes how you show up for someone.

Last question. If someone takes only one thing from this conversation, what should it be?

That your body has been showing you the signs all along. It never really went silent. Most of us just weren’t taught how to listen. My work is helping people learn that language again β€” and once they do, it changes everything about how they take care of themselves.
